Wirral Environmental Network are delighted to have been successful with a Liverpool City Region Community Environment Fund grant to help create Community Green Hub in Bidston & St James.
With support from Wirral Council, Magenta, Wirral Tree Wardens and other community groups and individuals, the project will involve the rejuvenation of neglected green space. Plans include creating a tree nursery, an orchard, a community allotment, a pollinator area & outdoor craft-upcycling space, supported by workshops.
The Community Green Hub brings a currently unused space back into life and use. It is a demonstrator site for practical experience in environmental nature services and management.
Workshops how to prepare the growing areas – building raised beds, preparing the soil, planting a nature rich hedgerow, a mini tree nursery and orchard, grow your own and nature based crafts & upcycling.
They will include environmentally friendly approaches to greening – peat free compost or, create your own compost, collection and use of rainwater, use of native plants, bee friendly plants, pollination and biodiversity, food miles and seasonality, use planters and containers made from upcycled materials. The focus is on community, low carbon solutions and reducing pollution whilst ensuring easy maintenance.
It is hoped that the Green Community Hub will bring the whole community together in a project that invests in the future by starting a local process that will be important in future years as a means to capture emitted CO2 and live a low carbon lifestyle.
