Wirral Environmental Network is a local charity which aims to advance the education of the public about the preservation of our world’s natural environment, ecological sustainability, natural resource conservation, waste minimisation, recycling and the principles of fair trade, within Wirral and the surrounding area.
It is also a focal point for sustainability issues locally and is the administrative centre for projects including Wirral Fairtrade Campaign, Gardens In Schools, Energy Detectives, and the Plants On Plates Community Garden.
We were formed in 1985 (as Wirral Green Alliance) as an umbrella organisation representing the non party political aspirations of the Green movement in Wirral and the surrounding area.
In April 2009 the name of the organisation changed from Wirral LA21 Network to Wirral Environmental Network.
We are now the largest voluntary environmental group in Wirral, with a membership that includes individuals, campaigning groups, schools, community groups and Green businesses, all working individually and together for a better world.
As an environmental education charity, we seek to inform, advise, and encourage people to make the changes that will lead to sustainable lifestyles.
We believe that the severe limitations of our present political system means that the changes needed to secure a sustainable future for our children are likely to come too late.
Climate change is upon us, yet politicians still cannot agree on the way forward. As a non-party political organisation, we believe we can bring about change by motivating people to take charge of their lives. Wirral Environmental Network does not seek to effect these changes via political candidates and the ballot box.
